About us
A Venezuelan company that began operations in 1994. Its expertise is based on a training program
developed in 1991 by COOPER / T. SMITH Stevedoring in Darrow, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, which
included river navigation operations, hands-on maneuvers on the Mississippi River, and bulk, semi-bulk
and general (“dry”) cargo loading and unloading of ships using “barge cranes” (“Duty Cycle Gantry
Floating Crane”). It also draws on engineering know-how transferred by River Consulting Engineers Inc.
of New Orleans. The most significant experience listed below is also based on a later on-site training
program developed with ORINOCO BULK HANDLING (a subsidiary of COOPER/T. SMITH) on the Orinoco River.
- Design, construction and commissioning of a temporary dock for unloading bulk bauxite ore from
barges: SIPRODEB, with a capacity of 1.2 million MT per year, built between Dec 1989 and April 1990
with an investment of US$ 2.0 MM.
- Design and commissioning of the CURIAPO 69 Transfer Station, with support from COOPER/T. SMITH
Stevedoring. Eleven (11) “top-off” lightering operations were carried out on overloaded bauxite
ships anchored in the river, unloading cargo onto barges to reduce their draft so they could
continue through the Orinoco River navigation channel.
- Several unloading operations of “black bulk products” (coke, anthracite) using “floating cranes” at
the ALCASA Aluminum floating dock, mile 193, Orinoco River.
- Salvage and refloating of the M/V RESTACK, grounded at mile 189 and blocking the Orinoco River
navigation channel (January 1990), and recovery of three (3) sunken barges carrying 1,500 MT of
bauxite at mile 220, Moitaco, Bolívar State.
- In the dry season, limited dredging of the Orinoco River caused draft restrictions on its navigation
channel in 1992–1994. At the request of the shipping agency LLOYD SUDAMERICANA, nine (9) “top-on”
operations completing ships' export cargo were carried out at the CURIAPO 69 Transfer Station, using
barges, a pushboat and “floating cranes”.
